3rd Annual Heritage Weekend set

ALBANY -Organizations from New York City to Albany to Buffalo, and everywhere in between, will be part of an exciting state-wide celebration of New York history and culture – New York Heritage Weekend. Now in its 3rd year, NY Heritage Weekend will kick-off the summer tourism season on May 19-20. Last year Heritage Weekend hosted 166 Heritage Weekend events with 143 federal, state, and private organizations. Heritage Weekend offers New Yorkers and visitors alike, special programs, discounted or free admission, to sites and events that celebrate national, state or local heritage. 

Historic sites, museums, architecturally significant buildings, local historians and historical societies, battlefields, historic districts, community groups and any organizations that connect directly with New York’s heritage may still participate by registering events on the Heritage Weekend website by April 30th.   


Joseph J. Dolan Mostly Irish Classic

ALBANY - On Monday, June 4, the 13th annual Joseph J. Dolan golf tournament will be held.

All proceeds will benefit the Irish American Heritage Museum, which recently moved into its new location on Broadway in Albany.

The tournament will be held at Wolferts Roost Country Club in Albany.

Assemblyman to host fundrasier

VORHEESVILLE- On Saturday, May 12, Assemblyman George Amedore will co-host the 4th annual "Take Aim Against Breast Cancer" charity event.

The event will take place at the Vorheesville Rod and Gun Club and will support Capital Region Action Against Breast Cancer, a breast cancer support and education organization.

The event is from 9-4p and registration is $25.

Take Back the Night to raise awareness of sexual violence

Take Back the Night to raise awareness of sexual violence

The 31st annual Take Back the Night rally and march will take place on Thursday, April 26 beginning with a pre-rally gathering of community agencies at the College of Saint Rose. The pre-rally will begin at 4 p.m.

The Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center and The College of Saint Rose will sponsor the event. Immediately following the rally, participants will march through the streets of Albany and will meet back at the college to hear survivors speak and a candlelight vigil will be held.

Sexual assault survivors will speak about their experiences and local non-profit and health agencies will staff informational tables during the pre-rally. There will also be music and art at the event.

Take Back the Night is an international event that has been happening around the world since 1976. It is held to help increase awareness and educate the community on sexual violence and violent crime.

Volunteers needed for 10th Annual Electronics Recycling Day

Capital Region residents and businesses with unwanted electronic equipment can recycle it in an environmentally friendly way.

The 10th Annual Electronics Recycling Day will be held on Saturday, April 21 at Taft Furniture in Colonie and volunteers are needed, especially to help unload cars.

The recycling day is being held in honor of Earth Day and people and businesses are invited to recycle used TV’s, computers, cell phones, VCR’s and other unwanted electronic equipment.

Last year, over 4,000 cars lined up to recycle unwanted electronics and over 250 tons of electronic equipment was recovered and recycled instead of going to landfills. The equipment filled up 20 tractor trailers.

NewsChannel 13, participating municipalities and other sponsors will host the event that will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

State of the County tour to begin this week

Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy will begin a State of the County tour this week.

He will talk with residents in each municipality about important issues impacting their communities. According to the county, meetings will be held during scheduled village, city or town board meetings and will allow for questions and answers.

Niskayuna Senior Center to host Lunch Brunch at The Cat's Meow

The Niskayuna Senior Center will host the April Lunch Bunch at The Cat’s Meow in Guilderland on Friday, April 13.

Seniors are invited to join friends for lunch or come meet someone new. The bus will leave the Niskayuna Town Hall at 11 a.m. and return by 2 p.m. The cost of the trip will be $6for the bus and the cost of your meal.

All trips must be paid for in full when signing up for the trip. Unless otherwise stated, all trips will begin and end at the Niskayuna Town Hall

The Town Hall is located at 1 Niskayuna Circle. Directions:  From Balltown Road, turn onto Nott Street East (Mobil Gas on Corner). You will travel about 1 mile and the Town Hall is on the left.
