Pine Bush Elementary School taking book donations

Pine Bush Elementary School is looking for used book donations for the PTA Used Book Sale during the Fall.

They are looking for gently used children and adult books, but they do not want textbooks or encyclopedias.

If you would like to donate your books, drop them off now through June 15 in the Pine Bush Elementary School lobby.

Partners for Albany Stories to honor retiring assemblymen

Partners for Albany Stories (PAS) will host a reception to honor three retiring assemblymen.

Assembly Majority Leader Ronald Canestrari, Assembly member John J. McEneny and Assembly member Robert Reilly will all be honored on Wednesday, June 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with presentations at 6 p.m.

Light refreshments will be served and a suggested donation of $15 per person can be made online at albanyinstitute.org or by phone at 518-463-4478, ext. 405.

Registering online will record your RSVP as tax deductible donation. 

According to a statement, the PAS is a collaboration of historic, cultural and preservation organizations working to develop an integrated historical narrative a marketing approach for the city of Albany. They work to build the capacity of member institutions to serve the community’s economic development goals.

Oversized Dutch Clog sculptures to be featured

The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID) will be showcasing Stand in the Sole of Albany at the 2012 Sculpture in the Streets exhibition.

The event is free and will have a walking tour that features sculptures highlighting Albany’s heritage using oversized Dutch Clogs painted by regional artists.

The sculptures that will be placed throughout downtown Albany include six 7-foot clog sculptures and four 3-foot pairs.

The Stand in the Sole of Albany walking tour will begin on June 15, 2012 and will continue through May 2013.

Walking tour maps will be available at area merchants, the Downtown Albany BID office at 40 North Pearl St, and online here.

Port of Albany hosts 10th Annual Albany Father’s Day Concert

On Sunday, June 17 from 6:30p-9:30p, Mayor Jerry Jennings, the City of Albany, and the Port of Albany will be hosting the 10th Annual Albany Father’s Day Concert at the Albany Riverfront Park.

As a salute to the U.S. Armed Forces and a celebration of the Army’s 237th birthday this month, the concert will have a variety of music performed by four military groups: The USO Liberty Bells, the Army Materiel Command Band’s Tennessee River Ramblers & Brass Machine Band, and the 94th Army Pop-Rock Band.

This is a free event that also features food and beverages available for purchase at 6pm. The event will conclude with a fireworks show over the Hudson River.

CDTA to present special projects at Art On Lark

The Lark Street Business Improvement District and the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) announced special art projects planned for Art On Lark: Albany’s Arts Festival on Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Chip Fasciana, a local artist, constructed a life-sized mock shelter out of recycled materials harvested from CDTA buses, bus shelters, and the Lark Street Neighborhood. Additionally, the Yarn Bombing project, designed by local fibre artists, including Karen Maag-Tanchak, will be showcased at the event.

CDTA representatives will be on hand at Art on Lark to distribute information and giveaways.

Elmo, Super Grover & Friends arrive in Albany on Feb. 1

Join Elmo, Zoe, Abby Cadabby, Telly Monster and Zoe’s pet rock Rocco for Sesame Street Live “Elmo’s Super Heroes” at the Palace Theatre from Friday, Feb. 1 through Sunday, Feb. 3. Tickets for all seven performances go on sale June 20.

Sesame Street Live “Elmo’s Super Heroes” features a variety of popular songs, many of them renditions of tunes that parents will remember and kids will love: “Old MacDonald,” “Splish Splash,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and “Sunny Days.”

The times for all performances are the following:

Friday, Feb 1: 10:30 a.m. (*Kid’s Matinee Offer), 7 p.m. (*Opening Night Offer)

Saturday, Feb 2: 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and 5:30 p.m.

FEMA to hold informational meetings on flood maps

FEMA is letting Albany County residents know that two informational meetings on new flood maps being developed by state and federal officials will take place on Tuesday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 20.

State and Federal representatives will be available to help residents identify flood risks and to discuss options with property owners for risk reduction and flood insurance.

Residents will be able to stop in at any time during open house hours, 4 to 8 p.m. and to meet individually with FEMA or state officials. Below are dates and times from FEMA:
